Twelve albums and twenty years into her career, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel finds Carey sticking to her highly successful formula of singing over slickly produced tracks. Aside from the slightly heavier Hip-Hop production, the songs themselves wouldn’t be out of place on any of her previous albums.
There is no denying that the woman can sing though and tracks like Obsessed (and its many remixes) or H.A.T.E.U will no doubt convert a few people who previously dismissed her as just another singer. There are moments where Carey, who co-wrote most of this album, ‘interpolates’ other peoples songs such as Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’ and Ahmad’s ‘Back in the Day,’ quite skillfully.
As the album draws to close it would seam she evidently runs out of steam with all the reinventing and resorts to in my opinion a pointless cover of Foreigners, 'I Want to know where love is' as the final track.
