Despite reassurances from Artists in this genre, when the main distributor for Broken Beat music – Goya – went under this year, the music virtually disappeared after that.
I was heart-broken. Broken Beat, to me, was the most important, cutting-edge, sophisticated, soulful, progressive, un-cliched and jazzy contemporary music I’d heard in the last 15 years and I’ve always been a massive supporter of it.
I was so pleased to purchase this, this week – Broken Beat is still with us! The a-side is that classy, down-tempo style that is so popular in that scene, with it’s off-kilter drum programming and almost P-Funk like vocals, but it is the b-side remix by our heroes ‘Bugz In The Attic’ that has got me excited here.
Starting with a big, anthemic vocal performance, the track suddenly thunders in with scatter-shot snare drum beats coming from all directions and a groove that is going to contort many a dancer. This will be the biggest record for me over the summer without a doubt.
