Originally as a sideman with ‘The Chevalier Brothers’ and ‘Fairground Attraction’, vibraphonist Roger Beaujolais came to clublands attention in the late 1980’s with his latin jazz project ‘The Beaujolais Band’ and the more state of the art clubland project ‘Vibraphonic’ – both on Acid Jazz records.
This time this is Roger with his straight-down-the-line Modern Jazz quintet steller line-up and he’s in a Blues mood (mode?). Very good it is too. It’s that good that I just can’t stop playing it in the car.
There are no barriers being broken here, it’s just good honest Jazz Blues all the way and is balanced beautifully with a mixture of tempos and feels. There is even something here for those that like to dance to their Jazz too with the original mid-tempo jazz-mambo composition ‘Some Blues’ (think ‘Work Song’). Very refreshing.
