Following on with the U.S. charge of authentic Funk bands capturing that late 60’s/early 70’s sound - like Sharon Jones And The Dapkings, Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed etc – we have this young band from Nashville led by veteran soul singer Charles Walker.
The album follows on from their now-classic 45 from last year ‘Slinky/Come On In’ (both on the album), and I must say that, after such a long wait, I’m a little disappointed. I can’t put my finger on what’s wrong here because the vocals are exceptional, they’re a great band and it is recorded authentically with analogue equipment.
I suppose it’s that nothing jumps out at me.
Having said that, although by accident, I’m tending to favour the almost Washington Go Go-ish ‘Chuck Brown – We Need Money’-type song ‘Can You feel It’ and the unbelievable deep soul ballad ‘Dig Deeper’, which is good as any noted ballad ever recorded. They’re meant to be excellent live, so I look forward to the experience.
