New York based singer, Carlton Jumel Smith, lays out his old-school soul mission statement and it’s a sweet retrofit.

It’s a minor vamp stripped back but with horn fuelled panache, tight funky drums, and crisp guitar that give it soul power. Lyrically, it’s a well-worn theme concerning love, positivity and protection. Quaint, but right on!

Vocal-wise, he is bang on the money, possessing nigh-on the same feral growl as Bobby Womack. This gritty approach makes him stand out in a current plethora of funk and soul releases.

Golden Rules continue their assault on the senses with this solid soul gem and once more, this stands them in good stead, as Carlton Jumel Smith doles out his soothing ointment.
