Now here is a curious historically rich and innovative project courtesy of the Cultural Detectives, who have put together an art experiment that brings unheard poems and stories of slaves to life by combining them with modern music.

The project was created by Wheeler del Torro and house legend Tony Humphries and their first offering, "The Merchant", is centred around a harrowing poem which was published in 1840 by Juan Francisco Manzano, who was born into slavery in Cuba.

"The Merchant" features a raw rendition of Manzano’s original poem as an acapella. Then, in addition, there are 2 brilliant house remixes courtesy of San Francisco house legend, David Harness who works an effective deep vibe with a dark bass groove and minimal key stabs. And Italy’s rising talent, Paul Adam's musicality shines with a soundtrack of opulent keys, emo stings and balmy percussive beats. A really interesting way to see these stories come to life and the music is great!
