Long before the emergence of Bob Marley,Toots Hibbert and Jimmy Cliff, there was Lord Tanamo an endearing character who started with calypso, mento and then ska.

A true legend (like Lord Kitchener) who was also a contemporary of Duke Reid a true pioneer as well.Yet despite being so well revered on the island , it was not until 1965 that an album dedicated to his output finally saw the light of day .Originally released by leading Kingston-based,producer Lindon Pottinger, this scintillating 2 cd re-release provides a fascinating insight into the the nascent world of jamaican dance music that covers his best-loved ska recordings from the period, including his oft-imitated but never bettered jazz standard, ‘I’m In The Mood For Love’.I remember Jamiroquai's version that stuck pretty much to the original but pales in comparison. It's truly a snapshot and magical song of the time and I myself have been fortunate enough to have seen Lord Tanamo perform it with the Skatalites at Glastonbury in 2003.

Other gems are just as enchanting such as 'Taller Than You Are'a tune I know from UK ska act The Duellers.Disc 2 collects 28 of the most popular ska and r&b sides issued between 1963 and 1964 on Pottinger’s Gaydisc and SEP labels, their number including numerous significant Jamaican hits by the likes of Jimmy James, Roy Panton & Millie Small, Winston Samuels and Dobby Dobson. This is musical dynamite and it would make the perfect xmas present that will light up any household over the festive holidays.Essential listening in my book....
