Trailblazer and organist extraordinaire Brian Auger cuts his teeth with his first piano led trio and this highly revered musical exponent seems right at home with his new direction and EP.Highlight for me is the scorching third track, 'Pools'. A strident piece played with authoritative ease that gradually builds with the motoric pulse of the drums (provided by the ever alert Karma Auger) and the deft funky touches of Dan Lutz.

There's a sureness of touch and delicacy in Brian's playing that reminds me of Ahmad Jamal, the sweet control of dynamics that come from his highly experienced jazz resources.Auger has lost none of his enthusiasm and it's good to see him stretching himself with new frontiers - the colonel is back! Do check it out on the jazz loving label Freestyle, who are continuing to put out quality releases time after time.
