Amazing Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodriguez’ debut recording. Never heard of him? Well, neither had I, but the clue as to just how good he is; we find by a glance at the sleeve notes and who co-produced the album with Alfredo. Mr Jones. Quincy is his first name. He also manages the boy wonder. Need I say more?
He is quite simply, one of the very best pianists I have heard in decades. For a debut, this is mightily impressive material, complex compositions way beyond his years and absolutely stunning performances from the 26-year-old. Quincy’s name on the CD creates high expectations, which are not at all unfulfilled. They are in fact, surpassed.
11 tracks composed and arranged by Alfredo. He is his own man for sure, but clearly draws on his main influences, Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell. I could churn out a long list of players who spring to mind while hearing this album. But I won’t. It is pointless. Rodriguez is a trainee somebody, destined for greatness. With or without Quincy Jones at his side. But it will speed up his journey to the stars, enormously.
Anything else I say about this very exciting CD would purely be filling space. You really need to hear it. Forget the reviews and his background.
Best advice I can give; add this CD to your collection fast, and snap up anything and everything this incredible young man puts out there. Go see him if he tours, and remember where you heard about him first. BLUES & SOUL.
I would give this album a higher rating than 10, if I could. One word perfectly sums up this guy’s talents: WOW!
