The thing with the greats is, they never stop still or let the grass grow under their feet. You may squirm at the idea of another "standards" album coming out, I mean I did when I saw it, but I was pleasantly surprised at what inventiveness this true master and his merry cohorts can muster.
"High Standards" sees three exceptional players pitting their wits against each other, with an energetic live feel that really shows the love. Bassist Jeff Berlin, pianist/upright bassist Richard Drexler, and drummer Danny Gottlieb's long association, has brought them much in the way of kinetic empathy. This platter literally sizzles with their creative interplay and the improvisation is second to none. This curate's egg masquerading as a piano trio will thrill any jazz listener. First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin! One of the all time monsters of the electric bass ever!
