KPM All Stars to play Islington in July
Funk alert! 'Danger' funk alert! Special gig on the horizon with KPM All Star Big Band at Islington Assembly Rooms on the 7th of July. If you would allow me to fill you in...
Way back in 2000 Strut Records' Quinton Scott and AGMP's Adrian Gibson compiled an album of unreleased library music from the KPM recorded music library. "Music For Dancefloors: The Cream Of The KPM Music Green Label Sessions" was released in 2000 on Strut to universal acclaim. Jam packed with classy and funky workouts highlight how goddam cool tv music could be, not sterile 'bed music,' but real organic grooves showing the best of soulful british musicianship.
The album plucked 20 of the dopest, heaviest tracks and one composer who kept popping up was Alan Hawkshaw known leader of The Mohawks and writer of the seminal "The Champ," a gorgeous slice of deep funk and overall heavenly Hammond heaviness! He's been sampled by thecream of hip hop KRS1, Eric B & Rakim, Ice Cube, De La Soul and you will have no doubt hummed his tunes as he's a famous for writing TV themes such as "Grange Hill," "Dave Allen at Large," "Countdown," "Superstars" and many more.
Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Cameron, Brian Bennett, The Mohawks are all confirmed to appear along with the KPM All Stars big band. More special guests are to be announced shortly too.
