Motown legend Nick Ashford dies at the age of 70
Such sad news again. After battling against throat cancer, Nick Ashford died in a New York hospital with his family at his bedside, on 22 August.
Nick, and his wife Valerie Simpson, were responsible for composing and recording some of soul music’s greatest hits and endearing anthems. Their work at Motown is well known via recordings by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and so on, while others like Chaka Khan, Ray Charles and Whitney Houston also benefited from the couple’s immeasurable talent.
Of course, the song writing legends enjoyed their own recorded success, highlighted by “Solid” in 1984, which followed their multi-million selling albums “Street Opera” (recently re-issued) and “High Rise”.
Nick is survived by his wife and their two daughters Nicole and Asia, and our sincere condolences go to them at this very sad time.
Sharon Davis will be paying tribute to Nick Ashford very shortly.
