As you may or may not know - the London Jazz festival kicks off on Friday the 14th of November and straddles two Jazz packed weeks at a host of venues across London.

First off, and one of Jazz calendar's events of the year has to be the big festival opening party at the Barbican. The event is called 'Jazz Voice' and has a veritable who's who of the Jazz greats taking part. Also with an added promise of guest artists dropping in (Nigel Kennedy I hear will be one) on an already stella line-up. The event will Celebrate a century of song, and will feature MELODY GARDOT CARLEEN ANDERSON CHRISTINE TOBIN CLEVELAND WATKISS LIANE CARROLL MADELEINE BELL NATE JAMES. The musical director for the evening is none other than Guy Barker, so as I'm sure you'll agree it'll be one hell of a party!

If you don't fancy the opening night at the Barbican. Then toddle along to Ronnie Scotts for another superb night, in which Ronnie's will be broadcasting live to the nation - care of Jez Nelson's Jazz On BBC Radio 3 as the official launch venue of the annual London Jazz Festival.

Other festival highlights include Jazz's current darling Melody Gardot on the 15th performing songs from her critically acclaimed album ‘Worrisome Heart' and some new material from forthcoming album ‘My One And Only Thrill', to be released March 2009. Read our Melody Gardot Interview, a truly incredible story.

We return to Ronnie Scotts from the 13th - 15th Nov for one of jazz's most important and prolific voices Vincent Herring who has recorded over fourteen CDs as a leader, and over two hundred as a sideman will be performing with Earth Jazz Agents. This band has developed an original, contemporary sound which is an energetic blend of jazz, funk and soul. With Vincent Herring on saxophone, Anthony Wonsey on piano & keyboards, Richie Goods on electric & acoustic bass and Joris Dudli on drums.

Want something a little different this festival, then how about Dennis Bovell and the Dub Band. Britain's reggae maestro Dennis Bovell is producer, composer, re-mixer, bandleader - and the heaviest bassist in town, pumping out the deepest of body-shaking dub grooves. Sunday 16th November is the day and The venue is Theatre Royal Stratford East Win Tickets

Also on the 16th David McAlmont promises 'A Little Communication Live' @The Jazz Café. In 1998 when David McAlmont released ‘A Little Communication' it was hailed as a British Soul Classic. So for one performance only David takes us on an intimate journey, track by track of the album that was called An Unassuming Masterpiece and the best vocal performance of the year by various publications. We invisige tickets for this evening to sell-out, so I'd book now if I were you.
We revisit Ronnie Scotts for the not to be missed Christine Tobin - album launch on the 18th November. Tobin has been a firm favourite of the UK jazz scene for some time, and deservedly so - the singer has a real knack of drawing the listener into her world, with all of her own compositions and her interpretation of standards bearing her own distinctive mark. She picked up the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist, after several past nominations, and has toured the country and abroad winning fans and critical acclaim wherever she performs.

The day after (19th - 22nd) sees dynamic duo and jazz world favourites, who indeed need almost no introduction - Cleo Laine and John Dankworth playing in their home from home Ronnie Scotts... Laine remains one of the great jazz singers, coupled with Dankworth's repertoire of landmark big band suites and deftly arranged song cycles continues to expand and surprise. This one is defiantly not to be missed.
