WIN TICKETS TO THE JAMES BROWN TRIBUTE AT THE BARBICAN
Win tickets to a truly spectacular event at the Barbican on Saturday the 14th of June, where a veritable who's who of African music pay tribute to the one and only James Brown...
This African tribute to James Brown has been assembled by saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis who joined James Brown in 1965. Ellis, credited with the first pure hardcore Funk hit, Cold Sweat, has sometimes been called The Man Who Invented Funk. As well as continuing to set the standard for funk arranging and playing, he has contributed arrangements to Malian singer Oumou Sangare's album Worotan and Senegalese singer Cheikh Lo. He also worked on Ali Farka Toure's last album, Savane.
Still Black Still Proud features an extraordinary line-up of international funk talent, including trombonist and long time Brown sideman Fred Wesley, Vieux Farka Toure (son of Malian Blues legend Ali), Senegalese singer Cheikh Lo, Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, South African vocal sensation Simphiwe Dana and Anglo-Nigerian renaissance woman Wunmi. Having reviewed many of these African stars recently on the superb 'Africa Celebrates' album, you are in for a real treat:)
