The first of what promises to be a massive annual soul event took place in north London on June 23, with close to a thousand people in attendance throughout the day.

The initial idea of Summer Soulstice came about as a memorial for Andy Weekes, a well-known character on the UK soul scene in the 80's and 90's, who moved to LA, but sadly died from cancer last year. As a lover of quality soul music and with many friends all over the world - including all of us here at B&S - close friends and family decided that the 'Summer Soulstice' should be a huge get together held in his memory.

There was a festival feel to the occasion, with families of all ages enjoying some bouncy castle action, 5-a-side football, bar-b-q, face painting. Plus a DJ line-up that included the legendary Froggy (and his 5k sound system), plus Nicky Holloway, Dr Bob Jones, Mark Webster, Ash Selector, Dave Cee, Gavin Page, Jester and Gilo Boy. There was a surprise PA from rising local r&b star Andy Tee and despite some heavy rain having the crowds ducking for cover a couple of times, the weather did not dampen the spirit of what was a celebration of Andy's life.

£5,000 was raised for the charity Cherry Lodge Cancer Care and the event's organisers are already planning to repeat it's success next year, with a bigger, better Summer Soulstice 2 which is planned to take place 21 June 2008. So watch this space.
