Thriller Live: Lyric Theatre Shaftesbury Avenue
Thriller live is a spectacular London juke box musical, covering over two hours of non stop hits right from the Afro hair early days of the cutesy Jackson 5 through to 'Off The Wall' and of course, 'Thriller' and beyond to his 90's rock stuff.
Right from the off cast members cajoled the audience into singing along and participating - a good thing too. You can't stand still with such classics as 'ABC', 'I Want You Back' and Stop! 'Off The Wall' too was nicely represented. The live band were in their element pumping out the intricate grooves and stonking arrangements effortlessly - you did Quincy proud boys!! There's no dialogue or acting but with an unobtrusive running commentary the show binds together. This seems to be the trend and a successful one at that, just look at the popularity of 'We will Rock You' or 'Jersey Boys', this production shows every sign of emanating the same success.
The second half sees Denise Pearson (ex 5 Star) taking centre stage and belting out 'The Way You Make Me Feel', looking fine and dandy. She certainly adds some sex appeal to the proceedings and her diva-like voice suits the MJ upper high registers. The choreography is outstanding too, a young funky cast contort and twist themselves energetically around the stage - think High School Musical for adults! The multi media effects too are awesome, cementing a very clever and interesting production. Muscular versions of 'Beat it' and ''Smooth Criminal' give added impetus to proceedings. Special note and worthy of much praise must go to the sterling lead guitarist (resplendent in leather and fake tats!). His note perfect Eddie Van Halen solo, on 'Beat It' was a sensation. Ricko Baird, MJ’s top stand in possibly stole the show with his crotch grabbing, smooth talking, moonwalking moves. A delight to behold paying hommage to Jackson’s most fertile period
Flyin Music have done it again with Adrian Grant’s vision in full effect! This is a must see show for any MJ fan-in these unsure times. The need for that good old fashioned feelgood factor is at it’s highest - go see this show at all costs you will not be dissappointed. Enjoy the nostalgia and the legacy MJ has given the world and celebrate the magic of Motown in all it’s glory! Spellbinding stuff!
