A year ago it was illegal to gather indoors with someone you didn't live with, and the return of live music couldn't have felt further away. More than half the year had passed when I finally went to my first (social distanced) show of 2021 in June, and it took an incredible amount of work by many amazing people to get concerts running again.

It was definitely welcome that just 12 days into 2022 Islington Assembly Hall in North London threw open its doors to welcome rising star Pip Millett. The Manchester singer-songwriter has been in a rich vein of form in recent times.

The night opened with a strong set from fellow Manchester up-and-coming singer KSR, who charmed the audience with a powerful acoustic set. Boasting an impressive vocal range, he's going to be one to watch in the future. Shortly after it was the turn of the headliner, still just 24 years old but with an impressive catalogue under her belt already.

Last year's "Motion Sick" EP showcased an exciting UK talent, and Millett was in fine voice as she delved into material from the past four years. "Make Me Cry" was delivered with authority and emotional depth, while "Heavenly Mother" showed why so many people are talking about her.

Last year Millett was active on the festival circuit and on current form, I'd expect her phone to be ringing a lot as organisers pull their lineups together this summer. Ghetts collaboration "Running" sounded fresh as she performed it solo, and "Try a Little Tenderness" showed a maturity that suggests this is an artist who can go a long way. Clearly relishing the opportunity to perform on stage again, the young singer is undoubtedly a performer to look out for in 2022.
