A capacity G Live audience was treated to a slice of melodic pop from veteran Paul Carrack. Like Joe Cocker, Carrack hails from Sheffield and his voice has the Cocker soul but with less grit and, in a live setting, a touch of Elvis Costello in his vocal delivery.

Unusually Carrack's band has two drummers, his son Jack and Deano Duke. The line-up is completed by Steve Beighton on sax, Andy Staves on guitar, Jeremy Meek on bass and James Locke on keys. Carrack divides his time between guitar, piano and organ.

He began with a trademark well-crafted song, "Amazing". The song of the night was "Tempted", the classic Squeeze song, well-known despite never having made the UK top 40.

With Carrack you get commitment and structure. You don't get spiralling solos, most of the tracks keep to around four minutes and have well-defined solo spots with corners, mainly for keys and sax.

The soul-drenched "Eyes Of Blue" saw Carrack clearly enjoying himself. "Satisfy My Soul" had a feeling of the Drifters. There were several nods to Carrack's musical influences with covers of songs by Ray Charles and Buddy Holly, whom Carrack had seen as a boy.

The soul in Carrack's voice came to the fore with his emotional 2013 composition "That's All That Matters To Me", an ode to his daughter. "Perfect Storm" showcased his velvety vocals over a Steely Dan-esque groove. Other highlights were "Living Years" and "These Days".

A singalong version of his 1974 breakthrough track "How Long" closed the main set. The encore of "Over My Shoulder" and the Searcher's "Walk In The Room" closed this feelgood performance of quality blue-eyed soul from one of the country's most accomplished singer-songwriters.
