Each year the historic Somerset House, on the banks of the Thames at the end of The Strand, throws its doors open for a series of outdoor gigs. In recent years the Summer Series alumni have included a dazzling array of talent, with The Roots, Chronixx, Damian Marley, Jorja Smith and Robert Glasper among the artists I've been lucky to see there. And yet again the venue delivered with its 2019 programme, with The Internet the first act to play in the courtyard.

They've been a busy group for some time, with "Hive Mind" one of the best albums of 2018… Third album "Ego Death", released in 2015, was a tough act to follow, but the group took it to another level with last year's record.

It wasn't surprising that Somerset House was filled to capacity for the latest performance, just months after they delivered a superb show at Brixton Academy.

Syd is an excellent frontwoman for a band boasting a wealth of talent, with Matt Martians on keyboard, Steve Lacy on guitar and Patrick Paige II on bass and Christopher Smith on drums. There's an obvious chemistry between all the members which translates perfectly to their live performances.

Early versions of "Dontcha" and "Under Control" are seamlessly pulled off, and "La Di Da" has a groove which reeled in the crowd on a warm summer evening. "Stay The Night" is a superb track, while their performance of "It Gets Better" and "Girl" take on a brilliant hypnotic edge.

With band members working so well together and producing top quality solo material, there is a lot more to come from this outfit in years to come.
