Friday night and a big occasion for London's hip-hop nerds, of who there are plenty. Founded by J Dilla in the mid-1990s, Slum Village are responsible for some of the genre's iconic moments. "Fantastic Volume 2" remains a fine album two decades after its release, and the large crowd who packed into Scala demonstrated the affection the group is held in.

Over the years Slum Village have been hit with tragedy, with two of the three founding members, Dilla and rapper Baatin, now sadly passed away. Now comprising of rappers T3 and Young RG, it was notable how many came to pay homage to legendary producer Dilla, who died back in 2006.

A school friend of T3 and tutor to Young RG, it was no surprise that there were lengthy spells where Dilla's beats rang out through the building. He may be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten, and plenty in the crowd were sporting Dilla t-shirts to show their respect.

But it wouldn't be easy to overlook the talent onstage... Both rappers have accomplished careers under their belts, and Slum Village have a wealth of material to draw from.

Young RJ was just 15 when he worked with Dilla on "Climax" from the classic "Fantastic Volume 2" record, and the joy signs through as he performs. "Selfish" had the crowd bouncing, "Get Dis Money" was rightfully well received - with a huge cheer as its bassline cut in.

"The Look Of Love" is a great moment of chilled-out hip-hop, and iconic track "Fall In Love" sounded superb as the two MCs delivered it onstage.

Slum Village have had their ups and downs over the years, but live to tell the tale. And fast forward to 2019, they're still a compelling live act to watch. Thoroughly recommended.
