Australian born south londoner Simone Craddock, spun out her quirky cover-versions project at the exceptionally stylish Brasserie Zedel with applomb, good humour and panache last night. It was a bold move but she pulled it off.Everyone knows the great american songbook but the british one still has chapters to be written and it's still in it's raw and nascent form but this delightful chanteuse has no qualms about putting the likes of Radiohead or Elvis Costello into the jazz canon.'Creep' sounded particularly good given a jazzy makeover (whilst maintaining it's lugubrious feel) as did Duffy's 'Mercy'.My personal fave though, was a stunning version of Kate Bush's 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes'.Written at the tender age of thirteen!

With a core band of Alex Hutton on piano,Nick Pini, double bass and the strident Tristan Maillot on drums,Simone and Co didn't put a foot wrong.Ms Craddock ensures energy levels never subside and she's canny enough to let these bad boys off the leash and let them do there thing (something most featured vocalists aren't very good at). So if you like beach ready bossas or tearjerker ballads or just good old fashioned medium swing numbers - she's the girl for you,a great night in a very glitzy setting coupled with consummate ensemble playing to die for!
