Lee 'Scratch' Perry: KOKO, London: 26/3/18
There are few musicians in any genre as prolific as the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Responsible for some of the finest music to come from Jamaica as reggae established itself as a worldwide force, he remains a force to be reckoned with five decades later.
It was Scratch who helped The Wailers find their voice, and his "Super Ape" albums remain among the most compelling the genre has produced.
At the age of 82, he maintains a huge schedule. His show at Camden's iconic KOKO was preceded by a screening of the documentary "Lee Scratch Perry's Vision of Paradise", a fascinating insight into one of the most exciting artists of the modern age. As the film ended, the screen elevated to reveal a five-piece who launched into deep reggae grooves before the main man emerged.
He's one of the most distinctive musicians in the world, his pink hair and colourful outfit ensuring he stands out from the crowd.
His set included a superb bass-heavy version of "Exodus" and the phenomenal "Underground" and "Zion's Blood" from the first Super Ape record.
Scratch's passion for performing hasn't diminished after all these years, and he puts on a compelling show.
He is due to play on the same bill as Toots and The Maytals at Alexandra Palace later in the year, in what promises to be a great night.
