"All I ask is to be treated as a DJ and not a 'female DJ," pleads Milton Keynes-based Juanita Shai Anderson, aka DJ 1E. When she goes on to reveal that promoters constantly expect her to 'pay in kind' in exchange for offering her gigs, you can understand the frustration!

It's not as if she doesn't merit being booked on her skills alone. Whether it's on-point mixing and chopping, diversity, natural charisma, tight mic skills, or even some cool little dances behind the decks, 1E ticks all the boxes.
She got a fairly classic start in the game. Before she DJed, she was an MC, and it was while on mic duties at a Sidewinder event in Wolverhampton that she couldn't help noticing that the DJ on duty at such a prestigious event couldn't actually mix. Quite rightly deciding that she herself could do better, 1E concentrated on getting her DJing skills on-point, and her ear for instantly identifying which tunes would blend well with which, made her a natural.

Five years deep, and having played alongside heavyweights like Westwood, Sutherland, Swerve and Rodigan, 1E's regular spot now is the Dancefloor Fillaz event running at Nexus in Milton Keynes every Friday night, promoted in conjunction with her cousin Andy Brown. This neatly showcases her capacity for diversity - she spins everything from R&B, slow jams, bashment and reggae classics, to crunk, reggaeton, heavy hip hop and all the rest of it.
