SPIN DOCTORS: DJ SOULSWEDE

It’s not just UK players that we like to shine the spotlight on with Spin Doctors – occasionally we extend our attention Eastwards to highlight some of Europe’s key kingpins, too. And when it comes to soul music in Scandinavia, they don’t come much more important than DJ Soulswede.

At the age of 8, young Ulf Norrman asked his parents for a copy of George McCrae’s ‘Rock Your Body’, and there was no turning back. The song had captured his imagination, and a further curious dig through his church organist father’s record collection set him on a path of playing, promoting and exposing soulful music.

By the mid 80s, Soulswede fancied the idea of becoming a DJ, and without too much effort, persuaded a local Stockholm station to let him present his own show, ‘Soul Power Radio’. Back then, though, he was really swimming against the tide. Black music wasn’t the popular genre it is now, and Soulswede even received blatant threats on-air for playing it.

He stuck with his passion, however, combining his day job as a real estate broker with his DJing, and playing his distinctive blend of heavy hip hop, quiet storm, smooth jazz, soulful house clubs all over Scandinavia and beyond.
