Festival time is officially over and it’s certainly been a busy one for my band. My favourite? It had to be the free festival at Imperial Wharf in Chelsea, London last month. Once you found the festival (the sign-posting was dreadful) you would’ve been treated to a pretty packed crowd that were ten times more responsive than any other Jazz festival I’ve come across. Make a note to check it out for next year.

I have a meeting soon to curate a big Jazz festival in 2012 but I can’t give details at the moment [Ed: Booo!]. All this seems to have come from being involved as a curator of the 40’s area at this years barrier-breaking Vintage At Goodwood festival. Next month I’ll have details of 2011’s one. It’s going to be incredible. I’m also taking care of an area doing the 20’s and 30’s too now.

Watch out for news of a new Jazz Dance weekender next month for February 2011. I’m just finalising details. It’s all rather exciting. You wait!

JAZZ LISTINGS ONE-STOP SHOP

You’ll now find listings of the major Jazz clubs at the bottom of this column so you won’t need to look over the internet. Just bookmark this page. Oddly, I’ve had no response from Pizza Express. This magazine gets an average of 650,000 hits a month so if you’d like your Jazz club mentioned in the listings please contact us.

'THE GOOD FOOT' ON TOP FORM

I’m proud to say that my Friday night DJ residency at Madame Jo Jo’s is doing great business. Now we have the dreaded summer out of the way the crowds have been piling in. Along with legendary DJ partner Healer Selecta we play 60’s & 70’s Soul, R&B, Funk, Boogaloo, Mambo and Ska 45’s, so if that sounds your kind of thing you’ll know where to find us.

REVIEWS

The Jazzinvaders – 3 (Unique/Social Beats)

The third album and a new change in direction. If you’re into the classic Jazz Funk sound of the mid-to-late 1970’s then this is essential. There are so many bands copying Incognito’s sound at the moment (I don’t need to name names) that it’s refreshing to hear something contemporary like this that has the influence of classic-period Roy Ayers but sounds ‘now’. It’s hard to pin-point any particular track as a highlight as it’s one of those rarities – a consistent album. Highly recommended.

Finn Peters – Music Of The Mind (Mantella)

After reading the press-release of this CD I was almost scared to listen to it. The CD was partially inspired by the pioneering brain-mapping experiments of Dr Mick Grierson and Finn's own long-standing interest in psychology, technology and the meeting points between art and science. Using bespoke software he accurately mapped his brain waves in a variety of states and translated them into notes and tones and started composing from then on. Creepy? On listening, I was surprised at how fulfilling a listen the whole CD is. As you may expect (given the source), the melodies are very angular but totally accessible. Some of the songs are performed over Funk and Afro Beat rhythms, some down-tempo. This project is so interesting I can imagine listening to it over and over and hearing something different every time. This is barrier-breaking stuff and I hope saxophonist Peters gets the recognition for this that could so easily be missed. I hope I haven’t scared you off. I’m sure you’ll love this as much as I do. Come on in and take a dip! Essential.
