Ho Ho Ho! Tis that time of year again but in 1996 this wasnât a particularly Festive edition, although the inside front page advertisement did show Nipper the dog wearing a Santa Claus hat. And thatâs about itâ¦.

Right letâs hit the news items. Scotlandâs biggest ever funk delivery, the Average White Band, performed two London dates in December. Tickets £10 in advanceâ¦.Jazz saxophonist Art Porter was drowned in a boating accident in Bangkok on 23 November. Heâd just participated in the Golden Jubilee Jazz Festival there.

â¦..Whitney Houston hit the hallelujah trail for her new album The Preacherâs Wife which was the singerâs third soundtrack album and featured four pop/soul cuts and a plethora (I love that word) of gospel performances by Whitney and the Georgia Mass Choir. The film was slated for January releaseâ¦.Sax maestro Courtney Pine played a one âoff show at Londonâs Queen Elizabeth Hall (South Bank) in December â¦..

Motown veterans the Four Tops were due to receive the Rhythm & Blues Foundationâs Lifetime Achievement Award with a further ten R&B recording acts â¦â¦ Blues legend John Lee Hooker, meantime, was honoured with the Blues Foundationâs Lifetime Achievement Award during the organisationâs tribute evening at B.B. Kingâs Blues Club in Los Angeles. On hand to help celebrate, apart from B.B. King, were Robert Cray, Luther Allison, among others, while President Clinton sent a congratulatory letter which was read out to the audience

...Top three UK singles were â No Woman, No Cry â Fugees; I Ainât Mad At Cha â 2Pac; Whatâs Love Got To Do With It â Warren G & Adina Howard, while the top three UK albums were â The Doggfather â Snoop Doggy Dogg; Emancipation â The Artist; The Don Killuminati-The 7 Day Theory â Makaveli

...Deniece Williams planned to make a rare UK concert appearance this month with the award-winning London Community Gospel Choir for a celebratory Christmas concert at the Barbican Hallâ¦. New material was expected from Keith Washington on MCA in the new yearâ¦The Return Of The Giants package featuring the Four Tops, The Temptations, Mary Wilson, Billy Preston & Syreeta and Edwin Starr, added another date to its itinerary to play Cardiff during Decemberâ¦..Dina Carrollâs new single was the title track from her Only Human album and available in two cd formats simultaneously releasedâ¦.Among the singles reviewed by Ralph Tee was In Your Wildest Dreams by Tina Turner featuring Barry White. On the album this was a typical, routine Tina Turner track. This, meanwhile, is not so much a song as a groove with Tina and Barry getting into some sensual whispering over a back beat taken straight from Barryâs 70s heydayâ. Mmm, does it for me Ralph!

...It was party time. Or more accurately, it was B&Sâs 30th anniversary cum re-launch bash at Bar Rumba (wherever that was). The pictures show loads of laughing faces â more male than female I noticed - including editor Bob Killbourn, Mark Webster, Mervyn Lyn, Jeff Lorez, and âother smashed people at a smashing doâ (not my quote)

...In Monsonâs Musings, Tony noted that George Michaelâs last single Baby Love sounded like a typical Whispers album cutâ¦.Chaka Khan was working on an upcoming autobiography in which she was said to finally publicly address her drug problems, failed marriage and strained relationship with her familyâ¦..Ray Parker Jr announced his new group Eraycism which carried the double meaning of his name and erasing racismâ¦. Fresh jazz from the Verve label included a 1968 re-issue by Ella Fitzgerald tagged Sunshine Of Your Love featuring a selection of standards and pop songsâ¦.. And thatâs about that for this year.

Until we meet again, stay safe
